Other Science Places to Go

Science is one our favorite subjects at BKR. Fortunately, there are many opportunities for children to explore science in our area and there are lots of books, PC programs, experiment kits and toys you can use at home that will satisfy anyone’s interest in science.

Nature and Animals

See our Places To Go page for a list of local nature centers.

House of Fins 99 Bruce Park Ave, Greenwich, Conn.

Okay, this isn’t a museum or an aquarium and it’s not in Westchester, but it is close by in Greenwich, CT, and it is the VERY best store to buy fresh water and salt water fish and sea creatures for your home.   It’s a great place just to go look, they even have a shark and octopus in the store!  The entire staff are aquarium fanatics and can answer any and all your questions.  They are very focused on the quality of the fish they sell you. You can trust what they tell you here. They also have a service to come to your home and set up and maintain your tanks.

Ecosystems

BeczakEnvCtrlogoThe Beczak Environmental Education Center

The Beczak Environmental Center is located right on the Hudson River and has it’s own beach!   Having been newly renovated, this beautiful center has a 300 gallon tidal tank that is home to river animals and plants, a three dimensional estuary model and several large tanks filled with animals from the river.  Their outdoor programs include “Seining the Hudson River” where they pull a large net through the water to catch fish and small animals for the children to see.   Some of their catch may surprise you; bluefish, herring, striped bass, shrimp, eels and comb jellies. Their latest program is called Cuckoo for Copepods which is a plankton lab where children learn about the role of plankton in the ecosystem, collect samples of plankton and identify the different species.  Children also learn about food and water cycles that effect our environment.

The programs are only open to groups.  The Bright Kids Resource arranges group trips to the Beczak Environmental Center. If you are interested, please call us for the next scheduled trip.
