Other States and Countries

We like to travel around the US and to other countries.  On our trips we’ve found some terrific places that bright kids and bright adults would love to visit!

Boston, Mass.

Some of our favorite places to see in Boston are The Museum of Science which is one of the largest science museums in the US, The New England Aquarium and the Boston Children’s Museum.

San Diego, California

Of course, you can’t pass up the San Diego Zoo or Legoland, but one of the best places is the Birch Aquarium at Scripps.  As they put it: “Birch Aquarium is the public exploration center for The Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UCSD, in La Jolla, California”. We love aquariums and this is absolutely one of the best.  It’s not huge, but the exhibits have some of the most exotic and beautiful sea creatures, kept by the expert oceanographers themselves, they are all healthy and lively in their artificial environments. This aquarium has the largest collection of seahorses anywhere!

San Francisco, Calfornia

The best place for any child or adult in the US (at least so far as we’ve found) is The Exploratorium.  Calling themselves a museum of science, art and human perception, the exhibits are ALL hands-on experiments. Mostly science oriented, this museum demonstrates science topics from biology to physics. They even have demonstrations (such as a cow’s eye dissection). The Exploratorium is housed in the Palace of Fine Arts which was built for the Panama-Pacific International Exposition in 1915.  The building is huge and filled with exhibits that will take you more than an entire day to go through. The exhibits are fun for all ages, including adults!

Another fun place is the Bay Area Discovery Museum.  Just under the Golden Gate Bridge, this place is full of indoor and outdoor exhibits for the preschool and elementary school age children.

Paris, France

citedesscienceCite des Sciences & de l’Industrie is one of the largest science museums we’ve ever seen. If you are a science museum fan and happen to be in Paris, this is a place you must visit.  The exhibits are excellent and have some very in-depth but easy to understand concepts that would intrigue high-school and college students. Many of the exhibits are in English though most are in French. There is an audio guide in English provided (as well as other languages). There is a special area for younger children with many hands-on exhibits, such as make your own badge which shows you the inner workings of a robot factory. This museum is housed in a warehouse which has been completely refurbished, but has the grand space needed for all the exhibits.  You can spend more than an entire day here!
