Science

Science is one our favorite subjects at BKR. Fortunately, there are many opportunities for children to explore science in our area and there are lots of books, PC programs, experiment kits and toys you can use at home that will satisfy anyone’s interest in science.

Animal - The Definitive Visual Guide to the World’s Wildlife

This is the most complete book of the Animal kingdom you can find. The book is over 600 pages packed with terrific information and pictures. With over 2,000 species and written with over 70 expert zoologists in coordination with the Smithsonian Institution this comprehensive book provides specific information about each animal combined with phenomenal photos and maps.  We use this book as a reference guide to answer questions about any kind of animal including insects.  The facts are short but very complete. You’ll never have to buy another animal book again!  Go to Amazon to look inside and see the editorial reviews.  This is a book not to be missed.  You can get a great price on it from Amazon, hardcover retail is $50, but Amazon has it for about $30.

House of Fins 99 Bruce Park Ave, Greenwich, Conn.

Okay, this isn’t a museum or an aquarium and it’s not in Westchester, but it is close by in Greenwich, CT, and it is the VERY best store to buy fresh water and salt water fish and sea creatures for your home.   It’s a great place just to go look, they even have a shark and octopus in the store!  The entire staff are aquarium fanatics and can answer any and all your questions.  They are very focused on the quality of the fish they sell you. You can trust what they tell you here. They also have a service to come to your home and set up and maintain your tanks.

Ecosystems

BeczakEnvCtrlogoThe Beczak Environmental Education Center

The Beczak Environmental Center is located right on the Hudson River and has it’s own beach!   Having been newly renovated, this beautiful center has a 300 gallon tidal tank that is home to river animals and plants, a three dimensional estuary model and several large tanks filled with animals from the river.  Their outdoor programs include “Seining the Hudson River” where they pull a large net through the water to catch fish and small animals for the children to see.   Some of their catch may surprise you; bluefish, herring, striped bass, shrimp, eels and comb jellies. Their latest program is called Cuckoo for Copepods which is a plankton lab where children learn about the role of plankton in the ecosystem, collect samples of plankton and identify the different species.  Children also learn about food and water cycles that effect our environment.

The programs are only open to groups.  The Bright Kids Resource arranges group trips to the Beczak Environmental Center. If you are interested, please call us for the next scheduled trip.

Plantarium Gift Set - Melon and Sunflower - Plantarium (not PlanEtarium) - This cool product uses gel designed by Aerospace engineers at NASA to create a nutritive and non-toxic culture media for living plant and animal ecosystems.  The gel allows you to see the roots of the tiny plant emerge as the seeds grow into plants which you can transplant later! The container is self contained and you don’t need to water the seeds. This kit comes with a peat mixture that you can use later to transplant your new seedlings by using the same container (after which you need to water the plants).  If you click on the link above you can order one from Amazon.

This and other products are made by GLOBUS International which is located in the UK. You can only get the Plantarium in the US via local distributors.  Other products available in Europe are the BioSphere and BeachWorld which are sealed self contained glass enclosures with real micro-ecosystems enclosed. If you are curious here is their webpage: www.beachworld.co.uk

We bought our Plantarium at the “Cite des Sciences & de l’Industrie”  in Paris, France.
